In the autumn, we were selected to participate in the competition to design and transform the new hospice for Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen in Hellerup. A meaningful project that would accommodate a mobile care team, Denmark’s first day hospice, and specialized departments for children, young people, and adults.
Our proposal for the new Sankt Lukas is designed with user needs at its core. Four key values—care and presence, dignity and respect, nature and life outdoors, and security and homeliness—form the foundation of the design. These values guide every decision, ensuring an architecture that fosters an atmosphere of comfort, care, and dignity for patients, families, and staff.
The hospice is designed to complement its historic surroundings, introducing a new scale and quality to the area. Poetic gardens are central to the project, integrating nature into the built environment to engage the senses and enhance well-being.
The design carefully balances privacy and community with both private rooms that provide peaceful retreats and access to gardens, and shared spaces that encourage connection and support. Natural materials, soft transitions between spaces, and a focus on daylight and greenery create a setting that feels both familiar and uplifting.
Environmental responsibility is integral to the project, with a low-carbon footprint achieved through recycled materials and energy-efficient design.
Thank you to C.F. Møller Architects and Artelia Denmark for the collaboration, to Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen for inviting us to participate in the competition and congratulations to BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group and creo arkitekter a/s on the winning proposal – we look forward to following you and the project in the years to come!
The new Sankt Lukas Hospice has been made possible thanks to generous donations from Den A.P. Møllerske Støttefond (A.P. Møller Fonden) and Sorana.
