Beyond the Roadmap: A transition plan for the Danish building industry – out now
Finally we can share the new Reduction Roadmap report—a comprehensive transition plan for the Danish building industry.
As climate science and its application in the building industry continue to evolve, Reduction Roadmap moves into its next phase “Beyond the Roadmap.” Inspired by recent insights from the “Doughnut for Urban Development: A Manual”, this initiative expands its focus from CO₂ reduction alone to include new targets for core Earth-Systems: Climate Stability and Functioning Ecosystems, which are interdependent.
This approach - defined as the Butterfly Framework - addresses the pressing question of how the building industry can operate within planetary limits. The approach is grounded in a dual strategy: Mitigating carbon emissions within the Reduction Roadmap reduction curve, while simultaneously fostering regeneration of the natural world. The Butterfly emphasizes that we cannot achieve sustainable development solely through reduction: instead, we must actively expand Earth’s capacity by investing in net-positive regenerative contributions.
The approach embraces systemic solutions, acknowledging the interconnectedness of environmental and socio-economic factors, particularly as Denmark’s impact relates to the global ecosystem. “Beyond the Roadmap” integrates human well-being within the broader goal of planetary health, aiming to make Denmark a leader in sustainable transition based on safe and just Earth-System Boundaries.
“Beyond the Roadmap” exceeds the precise, linear goals in earlier Reduction Roadmap reports by introducing a broader, bolder scope, yet remains data-driven and science-aligned. It acknowledges the importance of empowering the building industry to serve as a catalyst for regenerative practices and invites policy evolution and courage in shaping the future.
