Mimers Plads – a new public square with a distinct Copenhagen identity
Next time you get off the train at Nørrebro station, make sure to stop by Mimers Plads and you will find a new public square with a distinct Copenhagen identity instead of the metro construction site, which concealed the area for over a decade.
Circularity has driven the design of the square, which incorporates recycled materials from the City of Copenhagen’s store of materials for reuse. Over time, the City has stored many types of paving from sites around the city. Some of them are 100-150 years old and show their age in processing and surfaces. A variety of different stone sizes has been carefully selected and transformed into a simple and uniform expression –some of them from the square in front of The Old Stock Exchange and Christianborg’s Grand Square.
The carefully selected plants frame the square and protect it from traffic. Multi-stemmed shrubs and stemmed shrubs with eye-catching flowers provide shelter without excessive shade and ensure a pleasant microclimate on the square. The raised edges serve as seating, and the large granite blocks enable informal play using the many different levels and granite sequences on the square.
We look forward to seeing the landscape grow and blossom as time goes by and for the square to become a vibrant and active part of the city.
