Waterfront neighborhood of the future
The Danish Municipality of Middelfart wants to transform the existing port terminal into the waterfront neighborhood of the future. The new neighborhood will include a diverse residential program to ensure mixed demographics, offices, commercial space, shared public space, and a new resilient waterfront that can withstand rising waters from Lillebælt, but also cloudburst leads through the city to the waterfront.
The port terminal area is located directly adjacent to the downtown area will become a natural extension to the existing waterfront and historic city center. As a frontrunner in the green transition and battle against climate change, the Municipality of Middelfart is already pioneering several full-scale demonstration projects within the field of cloudburst and waterfront resilience, sustainable urban development, reforestation, and new types of energy grids. The waterfront of the future must continue and elevate the ongoing discussion and effort and produce a visionary plan for a sustainable, climate-adapted, and diverse urban district in the heart of the city that provides optimal conditions for thriving communities.
A total of 3 teams have been selected from a strong field of 14 applicants. EFFEKT is honored to lead a strong interdisciplinary team including Rambøll, Metabolic, and Carlberg.
The workshop-based competition will run until the summer where the final vision is submitted.
