“Sometimes architecture can make a difference! This is a good example of that.” was part of the statement by the Jury selecting the winners of this year's ‘open’ category for Building of the Year award. A category that had two shared winners this year - the Aarhus School of Architetcure by ADEPT and the Ilulissat Isfjordscenter by Dorte Mandrup.
The Veterans Home in Aarhus, is in a completely different scale, category and budget range than the two deserving winners, but nonetheless, the Jury decided to acknowledge the project with a distinction, because of the positive impact that the project makes in the lives of the many visitors and guest to the center.
The project is the result of a close participatory design process involving daily users, foundations and counseling professionals, creating a safe space for army veterans to socialize, support each other, and host events and workshops, for members and friends and family.
The renovation and new additions were inaugurated this fall by his Royal Highness, the Crown Prince of Denmark who also serves as protector of the organization.
