Bülows Palæ
The main building of the State Veterinary Serum Laboratory in Frederiksberg has been transformed into 18 elegant, bright apartments of varying sizes with distinct qualities such as high ceilings, large windows, sculptural staircases, new balconies, and skylights.
The building holds high conservation value, and the transformation has been carried out with respect for the history of the existing front house from 1908 and the rear house from 1934, as well as the building's current architectural expression. The entirety reflects the classic Frederiksberg style with herringbone patterns and stucco, fine detailing of window frames and hinges, and the enclosed asphalt square, which used to constitute the building's front plaza facing Bülowsvej, has been upgraded to a vibrant green urban space, integrated into the green campus edge of the area, along with a front garden area facing the residences.
Permission had been granted to demolish the rear house, but the sleek functionalist building from the 1930s possessed inherent qualities that made it a resource rather than waste, ensuring significant CO2 considerations. The building tells a story from a bygone era, embodying the characteristic features of Frederiksberg with its rear houses and additional structures added over time. It held a particular potential for conversion into apartments with high ceilings, good spatial arrangement, and harmonious proportions. Additionally, it contributed to forming a fine courtyard space with an L-shape, protecting against noise from the road.
RESOURCE INITIATIVES
The project emphasizes optimal utilization of resources achieved through various initiatives including material selection, reuse, and optimization of building space. A notable example is the preservation of existing load-bearing structures in the apartments and extensive reuse of resources wherever possible. Everything from the old bricks to high-quality details such as doors, panels, and stucco has been recycled, and surplus materials have been sent for recycling. Conservators carefully restored the sandstone ornaments on the facade, which has been fully restored to its original appearance and quality, including the addition of lime joints and original windows and downspouts. Technology has been discreetly integrated behind the original brick chimney to preserve the authentic expression. Even quirky and asymmetrical details have been preserved to give the apartments a special character and identity.
To maximize the building's area, the basement has been actively utilized, and the attic has been utilized much better than before with new dormers and windows and optimization of the existing geometry. Lofts have been added to optimize space where there was particularly high ceiling height. This has resulted in an intelligent and efficient use of resources while improving the functionality and aesthetics of the building.
